Minerals

                                              Minerals

We are well underway with our geology unit. The kids studied minerals for several weeks. They learned quite a bit about minerals. Here are some highlights: there are over 3,800 minerals, minerals are inorganic, they have a distinct crystal structure, and can form when solutions evaporate and when magma cools at different rates. The students made the mineral halite in class. They simply made a solution of hot water and salt and waited for it to evaporate. They got a chance to see some amazing examples of minerals at Brooks Memorial Library. The library currently has a mineral exhibit, which is the collection of Bob Clements. Bob is coming to Green Street School to talk about the collection and his knowledge of minerals. The students are eager for him to visit, as they have questions ready to ask!
