Room 2 News

February 17, 2012

Dear Parents,

It is hard to believe that our February break is here... the children have been working hard and I'm sure they are ready for a vacation!

This week in literacy we had some fun with Valentine's Day stories while focusing on the following story elements: characters, setting, problems that take place, and how the characters go about solving these problems.  On Valentine's Day the  children made a special valentine for someone in their life...maybe you were the recipient!  A great big thank you to those of you who sent something yummy in on Valentine's Day!  The children also learned about Ruby Bridges this week and spent some time discussing and writing how they could be a peacemaker.  They also wrote about what they admired about Ruby.  In phonics we are continuing to review syllables (open, closed and the vowel-consonant-e syllables).  We are really encouraging the children to use the knowledge they have about phonics when they are writing to help improve their spelling.

When we return from vacation we will be starting a new unit in mathematics.  This unit is called How Many Tens? How Many Ones? Addition and Subtraction, and the Number System.  A  family form letter is attached to the hard copy of the newsletter which details the mathematics in this unit.

In french class children have been working on learning new clothing words: socks, shoes, sneakers, dress shirt and jacket, hat, and learning to combine telling about clothing with color. They re-learned the call-and-response song Promenons-nous dans les bois with a wolf who wears different clothing. They have played the game of Loto dress-up-the-wolf.

Be sure to check with your child about a school – wide celebration that  happened  today!  Have a restful vacation...think snow!!!

Sincerely,

Gale Stahley
