Room 2 News - February 2, 2012

Dear Parents,

Homework was sent home on Wednesday this week.  In the spirit of building the children’s reading stamina they are now being asked to read for 20 minutes each night.   While some children have been reading for 20 minutes or longer throughout the year, those that have not been may find this challenging at first.  It’s OK if they work towards reaching this goal and can show progress on the times that they log in for reading on their homework sheet.  An example of this would be to read for 13 minutes one night, and 15 or 16 minutes the next night!  Having a just right reading book will help make the 20 minutes pass quickly.  A just right reading book is a book that is not too hard or too easy.  Your child should be able to read most of the words so they won’t have to constantly be stopping to figure out tricky words.  The book choice should be interesting to your child. You can help your child figure out what types of books they enjoy reading...maybe they love reading about animals, mysteries, fiction or informational text!  This is a great time to see if they can get hooked on a series, then when one book is finished there is always another to look forward to!  Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or need help in this area.

On Friday we will be making musical instruments to end our study of sound.  Please send in any materials you might have that would be helpful for this project by Friday!   The following is a list of items the children came up with that they thought they could use:

*empty paper towel or TP rolls      *empty kleenex boxes

*cardboard box pieces                      *small cereal boxes

*rice, noodles, beans...anything for shaking!

In math we are beginning a new unit called, How Many Floors? How Many Rooms?: Patterns, Functions, and Change. In this unit, students describe and represent ratios, use tables to represent and predict change, and work with numeric sequences as they construct and describe patterns. Students extend repeating patterns and determine which element of the pattern will be in a particular position. A form letter detailing the mathematics in this unit will be sent home with your child this week.

The children are working towards earning a hot chocolate party on the last day of winter sports.  Each day we add a marshmallow to our mug on the chalkboard if the class as a whole has tried their best to reach the particular goal we have set for the day or week.  This week we have been working on staying in control of our behavior which of course includes being safe, respectful and responsible.  I am happy to report the mug is filling up quickly!

Take care and have a restful weekend!
