Room 2 News - 12/21/11

Dear Parents,

It is hard to believe that our winter break is almost here!  The children are all excited about the upcoming holidays as they happily chat and share about their traditions at home.  On Monday this week a former student and his mother came in to share about their solstice traditions.  The children made solstice crowns after listening to a lovely story about the celebration of the solstice.  Then on Tuesday this week we received a visit from Mrs. Claus, who just happens to be related to someone we know :)  Mrs. Claus has visited with this class for the past two years and plans on continuing to keep in touch!  She talked to the students about the importance of their good work in the area of all academics, and she was amazed at how they have all grown since last year.  To end our study of December traditions we will have a beach party on Friday, and celebrate the holidays like they do in Australia!  Your child may bring a beach towel, sunglasses and a hat to school...we will be having a picnic lunch at the "beach"!

In literacy we are putting the finishing touches on our traditions stories - I am still hopeful that they will be finished by Friday.  Our math work is focusing on the place value system, and recognizing that the first digit of a 2 digit number designates the number of groups of 10 and the 2nd digit designates the number of ones.  The children use cubes and complete charts as they explore place value.

We will be returning to school on Tuesday, January 3rd, and the first winter sports day is Wednesday, January 4th!  Please be sure that your child has the appropriate clothing for their particular sport.

I hope you all have a fun filled holiday season with your families.  See you in the new year!

Regards,
