Quoi de neuf en janvier et février? What's new in French in January and February?

K - Children have learned to name some parts of the body

(le corps) - their hands, feet, nose, elbows, teeth, head, and

knees! They have played Jacques a dit (Simon Says)

and sung many songs about le corps: Savez-vous planter les

choux? Alouette, Je lave la tête, and Lave lave lave avec du

savon. They are now listening to Boucle d'Or et Les Trois Ours

(Goldilocks and the Three Bears) and learning to say big,

medium, small, bear, bowl, armchair and bed.

1 - Children learned and reviewed parts of the body (le corps):

their head, eyes, ears, mouth, shoulders, knees, elbows, hands

and feet. They sang several new songs to accompany that study:

Tête, Epaules, Genoux et Pieds, Jean Petit Qui Danse, and J'ai deux

mains. They are now listening to Le Petit Chaperon Rouge

(Little Red Ridinghood) and are learning words to retell it:

le loup, le panier, Grand-mère, le bûcheron, le Petit Chaperon

Rouge, la maison, and how to play "knock-knock, who's there?".

2 - Children have been working on learning new clothing words:

socks, shoes, sneakers, dress shirt and jacket, hat, and learning

to combine telling about clothing with color. They re-learned the

call-and-response song Promenons-nous dans les bois with a wolf

who wears different clothing. They have played the game of Loto

and dress-up-the-wolf.

3 - Children have been learning how to talk about actions (I sing,

you sing), reviewing some from last year and learning new ones

(play the recorder, play soccer, eat, drink, et al). They have

been learning to say and respond to questions as well as read

and write the phrases. They have learned the songs Sur le Pont

D'Avignon and Au Clair de la Lune. They will perform the latter

song in School Sing this spring on both recorder and voice.

4 - Children have reviewed parts of the body and actions along

with a new song "Attention, on commence!". They have drawn

and narrated some oddly-shaped monsters to each other.  They

have also learned to talk about their hair and eye color. They are

working on self-portraits to be hung in the 4th grade hallway

which will have both physical characteristics (hair and eye color,

height), skills (musical instruments), good Gecko traits (safe,

respectful, responsible), and a like (chocolate, reading). They

have also learned to sing the French alphabet song and dance

Le Hokey-Pokey.

5 - Children learned to talk about their five senses: J'entends,

je sens, je touche, je vois, je goûte in a variety of sensory

activities. They sang "Mes cinq sens" and "Y'a une pie" and

connected their learning to their study of the brain. They then

learned to say where they live in Brattleboro and will be continuing

their study of La Ville (the Town) throughout February.

6 - On January 6th students got to taste a real Galette des Rois in

celebration of Kings' Day - after several years of looking at paper

ones! They have spent these last six weeks studying La

Francophonie (the French-speaking world). They have learned

24 of the countries, where they're located, what the weather is

like, what the flag is like, and what time zone they're in. They have

looked at world time zone maps and reviewed time, they have

learned to talk about weather predictions by going to a French

online weather site, and they have reviewed clothing and colors. For

their culminating project they are designing a paper doll of

themselves taking a trip to one of the Francophone countries and

dressed in appropriate clothing for the weather. These will be hung

in the 6th grade hallway. 6th graders continue to have "le marché"

on the last Friday of the month where they spend the Euros they've

earned in class.
