Hello Parents,

Our class has been working very hard these last two weeks. I am proud of everyone for taking responsibility and keeping their work spaces neat and organized. They have been earning “money” and bidding on lots of fun stuff. A bag of Legos sold for $5800.00!!

W.O.W

Sacred- Something that is of great importance or holy. This ties into our unit on the Abenaki.

Symmetrical- An exact matching form of parts on both sides of a boundary. We are learning about symmetry in our Geometry unit. We made symmetrical butterflies. They are hanging in our hallway!

Health

We have been learning all about our immune system and how white blood cells are like an army that helps protect and fight off germs for us. Just a reminder that next week we will be watching an educational film on Ryan White, a young hemophiliac who contracted AIDS during a blood transfusion. The students will learn that this is a disease that attacks the body’s immune system. The goal of this video made for children is to allay their fears about AIDS by giving them a basic understanding of how the virus is transmitted. Please let me know if you have any questions regarding this film or our health unit.

Social Studies

The students are enjoying our unit on Native Americans. When it’s time for Abenaki learning we gather in our “wigwam” and simulate some of the customs the natives did like: burn sage, sing and chant with the drum, tell stories, and read medicine cards. Each student has picked a Native American name. Ask them what it is (if you haven’t heard already)!!

Math

This week we have been looking at how to measure the area of polygons using different units of measure. First we used a triangle, then we moved onto one square unit. This is leading us to be able to measure the area of rectangles and unusual shaped polygons. We will finish up with this unit next week and then move onto a number sense unit called, “Landmarks and Large Numbers”. More on this after vacation!
