First graders have been busy this week with so many exciting things! We had our Four Winds class on Monday afternoon and learned about prey and predators! We also discussed adaptations. Children were very excited about the lesson.
In Art this week students learned how to make a star. They came out beautifully!
In Math this week we have been working on solving addition and subtraction story problems. We are focusing on important vocabulary words that give us some clues about the operation. Some of our words are: combinations, add, add on, count on, take away, left over, count back, more and less.
In Literacy this week, we finished up our November journals and will be beginning our December journals! We have been focusing on reading strategies and building our fluency. We are also learning about digraphs. Students are doing a great job of being digraph detectives. We are also focusing on retelling stories in sequence without looking back at the story.
We are working on social skills. The social skill we are really focusing on is empathy, and understanding other people's feelings. We have been reading some stories that have lessons about being a good friend. The school focus for this month is "sharing". Many first graders are great at this! We have special buggets for sharing!
We have two new poems we are learning.
Merry Christmas by Eileen Fisher
I saw on the snow as I tried my skiis, the track of a mouse,
beside some trees.
Before he tunneled to reach his house, he wrote "Merry Christmas" in white,
in mouse.
Winnie Won't by Teddy Slater
Winnie won't put on her gloves.
She will not wear her sweater; Even when it's freezing out,
she doesn't mind the weather.
She can't stand scarves, they're much too itchy.
She wouldn't even wear a hat,
till Mom said, "That's enough of that!"
Our first school spirit day is Thursday December 8: it is farmer day!
