Many Ways of Being Smart
In our study of the brain, we looked at Howard Gardener’s theory of Multiple Intelligences. This is the idea that there are different ways of being smart. Below is a chart of the seven intelligences.
Students took a survey in class to see which Intelligence was their strongest. If you are interested, here is a different electronic survey that you can fill out yourself to see where you fall: http://www.literacyworks.org/mi/assessment/findyourstrengths.html
Your child could also do this survey and see if they get the same results.
Learning Projects
Since we had been studying the Multiple Intelligences, we decided to use that idea as we created learning projects from our mystery book, Belly Up by Stuart Gibbs. Students had many options; but no matter what they chose, they were being assessed on how well they used details from the text. Below are a few examples.
Map of FunJungle (Visual-Spatial)
Brochure (Natural) & Crime Board (Logical)
Henry’s Diary (Interpersonal / Linguistic) & Others
Below is a Newscast; this product is a great example of combining different Intelligences to create one product – and many of us had a great time helping!
And last, but not least, a song (Musical)
This is my song. It goes to the tune of “It was a one-eyed one-horned flyin’ purple people eater”. I hope you like it.
Two-Ton Projectile Pooping Fat Old PR Disaster
Chorus
It was a /: two-ton projectile pooping fat old PR disaster :/x3,Sounds no good to me.
Verses
Our mascot Henry Hippo is dead,
his guts from tiny little holes bled,
That sack of fat, he wasn’t so tough
when his big small intestine was living it rough.
It wasn’t natural, someone killed Henry,
so Summer is checking it out with me,
We went in Hippo River and scoured the back,
we found something pointy and it looked like a jack.
The mamba was freed, the tiger escaped,
and guests are feeding junk to the apes,
Someone stole some jacks and killed Henry,
and we don’t know who the murderer be.
We found out where the jacks were from,
they came from the Emporium,
Summer took a lead from Charlie C,
He said, ‘Pete was the one who killed Henry’.
My parents were arrested by Cowboy Buck,
the hippo is all splattered and I’m out of luck,
Security’s coming and I don’t have time,
I gotta find out who committed the crime.
Apparently Martin has been stealing,
J.J. didn’t find that too appealing,
Buck let the mamba and the tiger free,
Yes, he was the one who killed Henry.
Belly Up is a great book about a boy named Teddy who lives in a zoo/theme park. When the park’s mascot, Henry Hippo, is killed, Teddy decides to investigate. But as he looks deeper and finds more evidence, it becomes clear that he, too, might end up belly up. On a scale of one to ten, I would give this book a nine -and-three-quarters. It is a great read. I would definitely recommend it.
That is the end of my report/song about Belly Up.
