Farm to School Newsletter

The Farm to School Committee at Green Street School is up and running for the 2011-2012 school year. The committee is comprised of parents and teachers committed to fostering healthy local eating in school and at home. Some goals that the committee has already accomplished:

  • Local food was integrated into this year’s open house
  • Monthly classroom taste tests are continuing, featuring a local food of the month. October was broccoli, November was potatoes, and December was cabbage!
  • The taste survey for students to complete has a new choice “I don’t like it yet” which supplants “I don’t like it”. The committee is ever hopeful that new taste experiences and exposure can expand children’s willingness to try new healthy foods.

The committee notes the collaboration with Café Services, the schools’ lunch and breakfast food service, for their work in helping to gather and prepare local foods for these efforts.

The Farm to School committee has a goal of working more closely with the school’s garden. The kindergartners and the fifth graders planted tulip bulbs in the garden, so we should all be ready for this welcome show of color in the spring. And Abi Healy and the fourth graders worked together to “put the garden to bed” for the approaching winter months.

The Farm to School committee is open to all parents, teachers, and community members. The committee meets on the last Monday of the month in Sarah Rosow’s second grade classroom. Please consider joining us as we find ways to make local food more accessible to all.
