Marjorie Shriver's fantasy book review

A Tale Dark and Grimm

By Adam Gidwitz

Published by the Penguin Group

Have you ever cut off your finger to open a door? Have you ever held the Devil’s head in your lap? Or dressed up like his grandmother? Have you ever gotten your head cut off then secured by your father and done the same in return? If you have ever wondered about being in any of these experiences then A Tale Dark and Grimm is the right book for you.

A Tale Dark and Grimm (yes with two M’s) by Adam Gidwitz is about the TRUE story of Hansel, Gretel, the horrid baker woman and their story before and after the traditional tale. The stories Faithful Johannes, Hansel and Gretel, The Seven Swallows, Brother and Sister, A Smile as Red as Blood, Three Golden Hairs, The Broken Kingdom, The Dragon, and Their Parents take you on Hansel and Gretel’s magical journey of trust, compassion, and sibling love.

With the most hilarious narrative voice intermingled with the horror, sadness, happiness and pleasure, this book could be renamed A Tale Dark, Hilarious, and Grimm. I thought this book was an extremely well written way to get to know the background of the lovable fantasy. It was written without the most excruciating detail. However this was a good thing in the gorier and unsettling parts of the stories. I highly recommend this book to readers ages 10 and up or to any reader with a strong stomach.
