Seven 6th graders have joined the Literary Club, designed to showcase the writing of students who love to read and write. Literary Club students read a book from the school library each month, and write a review. December book reviews focused on the mystery genre; currently students are reading stories in the fantasy and science fiction genre. Some reviews are published in the Brattleboro Reformer, and others will appear here on our school site.
Running Scared
by Brenda Chapmon
Have you ever had a secret so big you feel like if you told anyone your world would come crashing down around you? In the book Running Scared by Brenda Chapman, 13 year-old Jennifer Bannon is just a regular teenager with a BIG secret. Like most teenagers, Jen has a best friend. Ambie is her best friend and she is very smart and organized and usually reminds Jen of homework she has to bring home. When Ambie comes down with the flu Jen forgets some of her home work. When Jen gets home her mom is ready to go to her night job so Jen has to take care of her little sister Leslie. She has to take care of Leslie when her mom is not there because when Jen was six her parents split up. When Jen puts Leslie to bed and starts doing homework she realizes she forgot her book, so she has to borrow Ambie's. She walks to Ambie's to get the book and on the way back she sees a terrible sight! She sees a woman on her street get hit by a car! As she sees the car drive away she recognizes it as her dad's red Chevy Malibu. Jen does not tell anyone because she is afraid she will get her father in trouble, but by not telling she could put someone she loves in danger.
In this book I really liked how you could always get a clear picture in your mind. One night while I was reading in my bed I could not put it down because everything was so exciting and I was just about to figure out the story. Also I liked how at the end, every little piece of the story fit together!
In Running Scared the main message was that if you know something really important and it helps the police catch the bad guy you should tell someone. And you should always count on your best friends.
I really enjoyed this book and I recommend it to 6th through 8th
graders!
